Bay State Equine Rescue Family

Rocky

Rocky is an 9-year-old, 14.3-hand paint gelding. At a young age, he was worked too hard, resulting in a severe case of ringbone. Rocky has now had his operation and rehabilitation and is strong enough to enjoy his new family, where he spends endless hours on leisurely trail rides, grazing in green pastures, and being spoiled daily by his best friend, Emily. Thank you for helping restore Rocky to health and happiness.

Apaulo

Apaulo is a very special guy. We found him at barely 10 months old, suffering from untreated strangles and living in a filthy stall with no food or water. After a long period of quarantine and hard, diligent work by the BSER volunteers, Apaulo has recovered nicely. Each day brings him new energy as his great, inquisitive personality shines through.

Avoca

Avoca is a Pryor Mountain Mustang filly that was born with sight but soon developed cataracts. At 6 weeks old, she was diagnosed as almost completely blind and needed immediate surgery to help restore her vision. Through the generosity of veterinarians and BSER volunteers, Avoca's surgery became possible. At the rescue, she underwent extensive postoperative care that included daily medical treatments and accompanying therapy. Now 5, Avoca has limited sight. She is a strong, special horse that deserves a good home. Are you the special someone Avoca is looking for?

Zena when she arrived

Zena one month later

One month later

Zena, a 12-year-old appaloosa/quarter horse mare, came from a home where food was not a priority. Zena spent all her life at this home, so there is no telling what long-term damage has been done to her. With around-the-clock care, BSER volunteers put weight on her and carefully trained her daily with a great deal of love. Zena has now been adopted and lives like a princess with her family in New Hampshire.

Hayley

Hayley is a 22-year-old quarter horse mare with a very sweet disposition but a distinct need for work. Before she was dumped, grossly underweight and barely able to hold her head up, she had been used as a Premarin mare. BSER acquired Hayley complete with a bronchial infection, heaves, worms, rain rot, and overgrown hooves. Thanks to your donations, Hayley is solidly on the road to recovery. She has gained weight and shows improvement every day. She has heaves and requires regular veterinary care, but she receives all the love and care she needs in her new adoptive home.

Flash

Flash is a great horse. He spent his life giving to people and was used extensively in riding lessons, horse shows, and trail rides. When his "people" were done with him, though, they loaded him on a trailer, took him out to a back road, and dumped him. BSER took him in, and now Flash resides on a beautiful farm with his lifelong, loving, caring family.

Maverick
Maverick

A picture is worth a thousand words. Maverick was as blessed the day he came to BSER as we were the day we met him. Maverick enjoys each day with his new family, who truly loves his inquisitive, smart, and captivating personality.

Epona when she arrived

Epona

Epona today

When she arrived at BSER's door, Epona was a very sad and sick pony. She had respiratory and lymphatic infections, worms, rain rot, multiple wounds, and never-been-trimmed hooves. BSER worked diligently to put a sparkle in Epona's eyes and a shine in her coat. Our work was rewarded when 3-year-old Epona ventured to her new adoptive home. There, she is gaining riding and driving experience.

Ember

Born to race, Ember was cast aside by the racing industry due to a deformity in her right front leg. But don't tell her, because she'd never believe you--especially when she is running through BSER's fields. A good candidate for light riding, Ember is available for adoption to an experienced, gentle handler. She is very gentle and needs a gentle trainer.

A 12-year-old quarter horse gelding, Pepper never made it to BSER's rescue facility. He was so neglected when we acquired him, emaciated and riddled with rain rot and an extreme case of pneumonia, he passed away on the trailer ride. We laid Pepper to rest where he will never be subjected to human cruelty again.

Willow today

Simply a treasure, Willow is a sweet, 9-year-old, Arabian cross mare. BSER found her starving, left outside to develop severe rain rot and worm infestation. She had also sustained injuries to her left hind leg and her right ear, now permanently torn in three pieces. With BSER's love and care, Willow has blossomed into a gentle, loving spirit able to demonstrate what appears to be show experience. In a caring, forever home, Willow will make someone a very proud partner.

Osirus

Osirus recovering

This guy needs all our prayers. A beautiful chestnut, 15-year-old, 15-hand Arabian/quarter horse gelding, we found Osirus emaciated and laden with the worst rain rot we have ever seen. But, that is only the tip of the iceberg. He was starved for so long that his systems were shutting down. Currently under regular veterinary supervision, Osirus has a long road to recovery. His setbacks have not discouraged him, though. He has a strong spirit and is not going down without a fight. He is supported every day by his new, loving family.

Apaulo

A beautiful, even-tempered, 2-year-old appaloosa gelding, Jasper is yet another casualty of the Premarin movement. Sweet and willing to please, he was diagnosed with osteochondrosis dessicans (OCD), a condition BSER monitored closely. When Jasper became available for adoption, he quickly caught the eye of a loving family and now enjoys the company of an equine companion.

Sox

Sox is a 13-year-old, 16-hand, sorrel thoroughbred gelding who suffered years of neglect. Abandoned by an owner who moved away and simply left him, Sox was rescued one day by a good samaritan. BSER took over Sox's care and discovered that he rides, cross ties, trailers, and is good with the vet and farrier. He now enjoys a forever home with an understanding, experienced horse family.

Storm is a sweet and gentle 14-year-old Haflinger gelding whose eyes bely a calm, intelligent interior. Although he is trained to voice command under saddle, he suffers from a condition called roaring, which will require surgery. With that procedure behind him, Storm will be breathing properly and ready to find his forever family.

Alf's kind eye

Alf at pasture

A 12-year-old Fjord gelding, Alf has a perfectly sweet personality, always ready to greet BSER visitors with a gentle nicker. Dumped in the auction underweight and in need of dietary attention, Alf improved significantly after just a short time in BSER's care. With volunteers now attending to his nutritional needs daily, Alf is putting on weight and approaching the time when he can join his lucky adopters.

Merlin's kind eye

Gentle giant Merlin hesitated not at all when asked to load on the trailer at the auction. Rescued from abandonment in a New Hampshire cow pasture, this 17-year-old, 17.1-hand Dutch Warmblood gelding stood out not only for his impressive height but for his serene demeanor--despite his sadly lacking physical condition. In the short time Merlin has been in BSER care, he has improved and continues to demonstrate kindness, generosity, and a loving spirit. Some day, Merlin will be ready for his proper reward: a permanent, loving home.

Cass

Cassandra in the early days

Cass at pasture

Cassandra kicking up her heels

A 3-year-old paint/Arab cross, Cassandra was rescued from an uncertain future at the auction. Instead of being vibrant, playful, and full of life, this gentle, fine-boned, chestnut-hued beauty was dejected, frightened, and battered beyond her years. Deemed "too small" by her owner, Cassandra was fortunate to arrive at BSER's barn. With us, she has made a new start, and already she has begun to blossom. As soon as she is ready, BSER hopes to offer this treasure to her forever adopters.

T and Foal

"T"and Foal

"T" is a six year old appaloosa mare. She was confiscated from extremely neglectful conditions. With foal at her side she was removed from a confined area that had not been cleaned in well over ten months. Her hoofs had not been cared for in years. BSER is working diligently to get her legs and hoofs corrected, her physical health restored and peace of mind assured.

filly

This filly, born in January, arrived at the rescue on April 18, covered from head to toe in crusted manure. She had never been handled and was completely terrified of humans. In this short time she has found cleanliness, plenty of food, safe shelter, generous pastures and most importantly love and gentle handling from the BSER volunteers.

Metro up close

Metro arrived, a stallion, at the rescue as a confiscation from a very neglectful home. He is a beautiful appaloosa, 12 year old, 15.2 hand gelding. He is very gentle to work around, loves to be brushed, and is happy to have food, shelter and a clean, safe environment. His hooves were grossly neglected and it is undetermined if he will fully recover. Preliminary treatments have shown positive results. More time, treatment and handling are what Metro needs now.
